One intelligence practice, three areas

The same reconnaissance capability serves three different purposes. Below we show how OSINT fits into investigative audit, detective work and the protection of classified information — and where we run each of these practices.

The common denominator

Why this is one practice, not four firms

Vetting a counterparty before a contract, tracing a debtor's assets, identifying the source of an information leak, and checking what an organisation reveals externally — on the face of it, four different engagements. In truth each begins with the same question: what can be established lawfully, and how to verify it.

That is why we treat reconnaissance as the core, and audit, detective work and information protection as three ways of applying it. The client benefits twice over: a consistent methodology regardless of the type of matter, and a single practitioner who understands how findings in one area translate into another.

Investigative audit and internal control

In examining fraud, irregularities and reports of misconduct, accounting records show only part of the picture. Open-source intelligence supplies the rest: it reveals connections between entities, conflicts of interest among decision-makers, suppliers controlled by people inside the organisation, and flows that the invoices alone do not show.

OSINT directs the audit — it shows where to look and whom to ask — and its findings, backed by sources, strengthen the evidence in internal proceedings and, where needed, in court.

Detective services for business and private clients

In commercial and private matters, open-source reconnaissance precedes and directs field work. Before an investigator goes into the field, intelligence helps establish assets and their components, a likely whereabouts, the background and connections of a counterparty, or the credibility of the other side of a dispute.

As a result, observation and field enquiries are shorter, cheaper and more accurate — and often the analysis of open sources is enough to answer the client's question without triggering costly work.

Classified information protection and organisational security

In protecting information we run the same reconnaissance against the client's own organisation — on their instruction. We retrace what an attacker preparing an attack would see: visible systems, mail patterns, staff data, documents with metadata, traces in breaches. The result shows the real exposure surface before someone unauthorised exploits it.

This is a natural complement to the role of the information-protection officer and to security training: analysing your own footprint turns awareness of threats into a concrete list of things to close.

How it works in practice

Findings in one area strengthen the others

From exposure to audit

Footprint analysis reveals a supplier linked to a decision-maker. That signal triggers an investigative audit of a specific procurement area.

From audit to detective work

The audit shows assets being moved out. Intelligence establishes their likely components, and an investigator documents the facts for proceedings.

From a matter to protection

While handling a matter we see how easily sensitive information about the client could be established. That is the starting point for analysing their own exposure surface.
